Dr. Lawrence Blair is an explorer, film maker, author, and public speaker on the peoples and creatures of Indonesia. A resident of Bali, he has assisted and led marine expeditions throughout the archipelago since 1978.
Lawrence earned his doctorate at Lancaster University, England, with a thesis which explored and defined the field of Psycho-Anthropology. This was subsequently published as the highly successful book: Rhythms of Vision – The Changing Patterns of Belief.
Lawrence is the writer, presenter and co-producer (with his late brother Lorne) of the PBS and BBC TV adventure series Ring of Fire, introduced by Richard Gere, which won two EMMY awards, aired in over sixty nations. Lawrence also wrote the companion book Ring of Fire, describing his astounding ten years of filming Indonesians explorations.
In the early 1970s, Lawrence Blair and his brother Lorne set off on one of the most audacious adventures of recent times – to follow the steps of Alfred Russel Wallace through many hundreds of the 14,000 islands of the Indonesian archipelago.
What had begun as a single trip funded with £2,000 of Ringo Starr’s money, to chart the ascension of the last remaining king of Sulawesi’s Toraja tribe back to the stars, they believed we descended from on flying saucers, while sailing with the piratical Bugis tribe to film the Aru Islands’ Greater Bird of Paradise, turned into a 19-year “odyssey of self-discovery across the last wild gardens of Earth” – otherwise known as Ring of Fire.
In 2005 and 2006 he wrote, presented and co-produced for SKY TV UK, the 5-part series Myths Magic and Monsters. Lawrence has lectured and appeared widely on international radio and tv, on psycho-anthropology, tribal mysticism and the ‘secrets’ of Indonesia.
